Importance of title:
Throughout the novel, the boy and the man travel south on the road. The
title is, therefore, named after the main setting of the work. Although
they pass many towns and homes, they never stay long in any of them- they are
always on the road, symbolizing a kind of transient existence. Even though the goal of the two main characters
is to get to the end of the road (literally, at the coast), the goal is empty
for them as they reach an unsatisfying haven. In the end, they go back to the
road - a constant throughout the novel.
